Thanksgivingはリンカーンが米国の祝日にした
Thanksgiving（感謝祭）は、冬の到来を感じさせるイベントです。感謝祭自体は家族で楽しみます。家族が遠方から集まって、七面鳥をオーブンで焼いて、食べる。歴史的には、感謝祭は古くから行われていますが、米国全域で公式に行われるようになったのは１８６３年の南北戦争時代、リンカーン大統領によってです。

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

（アメリカに与えられた神の恩寵を）アメリカ市民全員が、心と声を一つにして、厳粛に、尊敬と感謝の念をもって受け取めるのがまさしく適当であると思います。したがって、合衆国のすべての地域のわがアメリカ市民に、また、航海に出ていたり、国外に滞在している人も含めて、天にまします慈悲深い父なる神に感謝と賞賛をささげるため、この次の１１月の最後の木曜日をとり置くよう呼びかけます。救済と祝福は神のみ与えられるのですから、神に賛美を捧げるのは当然ではありますけれど、それと同時に、我が国の過ちと（神への）不服従を心から悔い、避けられなかった嘆かわしい内戦で、夫をなくしたもの、孤児になったもの、身内を亡くしたもの、苦しんでいるものに神の加護が加えられる様に祈ること、また、全能の神の手が、我が国の傷をいやし、神の御心にかなうかぎり、できるだけはやく、平和と、調和、静寂、我が国の団結とを楽しめるよう、心のそこから熱烈に願うことをすすめます。*1
この文章では、Thanksgivingは明らかに『神への感謝』です。
私は、リンカーンがこんなに宗教的な文章を書くとは知りませんでした。現代ではこういう大統領の演説はないと思います。宗教に対する感受性は今と全然違います。
*1:リンカーンの文章は今風ではありません。文章が長く、言葉を対置もしくは列挙するのが特徴的です。例えば、fit and proper; solemenly, reverently and gratefully; one heart and voice; at sea and in foreign lands; set apart and observe; Thanksgiving and Praise; deliverances and blessings; perverseness and disobedience.これらは、内容を重視するなら、fit; respectfully; one heart, etcといってもほとんど同じ意味です。
