In Tokyo, in the past three years, the school board has punished teachers in 350 cases for being unpatriotic at school events. The teachers refused to sing the national anthem and stand before the national flag, both of which, to many here and abroad, are linked to Japan's former militarism.

これにはカチンときました。日の丸・君が代は軍隊でも使われていましたが、それだけじゃなくて、戦後僕らが生きてきた時代にも使われています。それを、『日本でも海外でも過去の軍国主義と連結している』というのはプロパガンダの最たるものです。そんなことを言えば、朝日新聞の旭日旗はどうなるんだ？

そもそもこの節が付け加えられた理由は、unpatriotic（愛国的でない）ことは、アメリカでは倫理的に問題のある態度という一般的な理解があるから、それを迂回するために、unpatrioticなのは、『日本の国旗国歌が過去の軍国主義の象徴である』ことを入れておかないとアメリカ的に辻褄があわないからです。
